A visionary designer, best known for such items as the Jawbone Jambox, Herman Miller’s Sayl chairs, and Swarovski chandeliers, is putting his mind and his money into the area of education and technology. Yves Behar is not just putting his efforts into any old education methods either. He along with Nicholas Negroponte of MIT’s Media Lab, are teaming up to build a completely solar powered laptop for the meager price of $100. The new product is the brainchild of Behar and Negroponte and is being targeted at children in the world’s poorest countries. This lighter, less energy driven, and more materials friendly version of the laptop is part of the duos intention of making technology available to everyone, especially children that might otherwise not be able to afford such an extravagant teaching and learning tool.

The project has been on the table for nearly six years. And while it is certainly a worthwhile goal to bring education technology to everyone, Negroponte sees a much bigger benefit to everyone from making computers as available as possible around the globe. He says that with widespread education we will eventually be able to figure out remedies for the water problems facing many countries, pollution, energy, as well as a host of health related issues. The laptops that Negroponte’s group originally designed are already making their way around the globe having distributed over 2.5 million of them from Alabama to Angola, Africa.

The newer version of the laptop was recently on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in January and like the earlier version it is designed to appeal to kids first and foremost. It has a flexible, durable screen, it is green and has a solar panel that will charge the unit in the sunlight. The new model, dubbed the XO-3, is said to be ideally suited to the target audience.

Behar has been involved in other projects geared to helping the most needy children globally so the XO-3 is nothing new for him. He was asked by the Mexican government and a local optics company to help with their See Better to Learn Better campaign for which Behar designed a collection of customized eye glasses that were given away for free to school children in Mexico. The problem was that in Mexico and other parts of South America wearing glasses was seen as a stigma and therefore avoided even by those children that needed glasses to see. Behar created multi-colored glasses with cool designs and encouraged the children to pick out their own colors and designs that they liked best while also taking part in the larger campaign to encourage kids to wear glasses if they need them while also erasing the stigma associated with wearing glasses.

My take:

Wow, what a nice story. So often in the news we hear bad news and tales of even worse people. It’s a pleasant surprise to hear about people that want to make a difference and are putting their money and their clout behind the cause. And, I think it is very true what the article says about Negroponte and his vision for how expanding education can help everyone. You never really know where the next big idea will come from but it is in all of our interests to seek out the source of that idea and to encourage the free exchange of information.

Fur Killer Charged

Animal activists are said to be quite the dedicated and at times rabid group when it comes to defending the rights of animals in the United States. However, one Ohio woman seems to have taken things just a bit too far and luckily the authorities were able to thwart her before she could carry out her plan. Meredith Marie Lowell, aged 27, from Cleveland Heights, Ohio is accused of setting up a phony Facebook page for the purpose of hiring a hit man to carry out a killing on an innocent victim that just happened to be wearing real fur.

Her Facebook page said that it was her intention to create a community of animal lovers in order to find a killer that would carry out a random shooting or stabbing of anyone wearing fur some time around the end of 2011 or the beginning of 2012. When the FBI got wind of her diabolical plot, they set up a sting operation with one agent posing as a hit man. Ms. Lowell then instructed the FBI agent posing as a killer to carry out the murder in a local library and that she would be waiting and watching the crime so as to be able to hand out fliers about animal cruelty at the scene of the crime. Ms. Lowell had some specifics regarding the method of killing and the age of the victim telling the FBI man that he should use a large, sharp knife that would be long enough to stab the victim or to cut their throat and that he should look for someone that is at least 12 years old but better if they would be over the age of 14.

Earlier this year police say that Ms. Lowell contacted the Cleveland Heights police department and told them that they should be conducting an investigation into animal cruelty and those people that chose to wear real fur clothing. Ms. Lowell was arrested on Tuesday and she is awaiting a hearing for her alleged crimes against innocent fur wearers.

Sounds like an insanity defense if I ever heard one. I bet we find out that this lady has a history of this type of thing as well as other irrational behavior. I’m glad that she didn’t get to carry out her plan and that no one was injured. EPA Sued Over Weed Killer

If you spray it on your lawn and it kills weeds, what do you think the chances are that it might end up killing you? Well, if not killing you, what are the chances that it can make you very sick and perhaps ruin the long term function of some of your most vital organs? Well, one environmental group is tired of asking the EPA these questions and is now suing the government environmental watch dogs over the weed killer 2,4-D. This chemical is one of the most widely used agents in popular weed killers used throughout the United States and ironically enough, was also one of the most toxic agents in the Vietnam War era herbicide, Agent Orange. The Natural Resources Defense Council went to court today with a petition against the EPA for failing to respond to their earlier petitions that the the government group move to take this toxic chemical off the market.

At present the NRDC is concerned about the direct connection that they claim between 2,4-D, and a host of health issues related to this products use in killing weeds on lawns, backyards, public playgrounds, baseball fields and other athletic fields where children play. Estimates of the use of this compound are about 46 million pounds every year in the U.S. in more than two dozen different types of weed and feed products being sold on the market.  The NRDC says that 2,4-D can cause damage to the nervous system, liver and kidneys. The EPA for its part also considers the compound to be a dangerous pollutant and that children are particularly at risk from any fumes or dust from the chemical that might make its way back into the home after having been applied to an outdoor area.

The chemical 2,4-D is also used on farmland across the United States and medical researchers say that there is a clear link between this poison and incidences of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma among farmers that use this weed killer on their crops.

My take:

Nothing will be done about this poison, just like nothing was ever done to help the hundreds of thousands of U.S. soldiers that were sprayed with Agent Orange in Vietnam. Just look up the manufacturer of 2,4-D and then look up how much they pay to politicians and you’ll have a better idea of why nothing will ever be done to get this stuff off the market. It is always amazing to me to see a neighbor spray this crap on their lawn and then to see their kids and their dogs playing on the same lawn just a few hours later. Do they actually believe that the toxicity of this garbage only effects weeds?

Unemployment Claims Lower

Evidence that the job market is slowly coming around was found again today in first time claims for unemployment benefits for last week, which remained unchanged from the prior week and now are hovering at four year lows for this gauge of the health of the employment sector of the U.S. economy. Rimes and X Factor

The open slot on the judges table at the Fox reality show, X factor, has a very interested party in the person of LeAnn Rimes. The popular singer says that she is interested in being a judge on the show and that her “people” have contacted their “people” to inquire about the possibility. In fact, Ms. Rimes said that she has met with the co-producer of the show FremantleMedia North America to discuss this opening as well as other spots that might suit her. Simon Cowell, the incorrigible Brit that runs X Factor has been looking for judges to replace Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger before the second season of the show begins and rumor has it that he is looking for two female judges only. Ms. Rimes would seem to fit the bill very nicely but Cowell has been known to dance to the beat of his own drum when it comes to the show so it remains to be seen if he and music producer L. A. Reid will offer her the position on the X Factor judges panel.

Media types following the story say that Ms. Rimes would bring a few positives to the show, including a background in country music, which remains one of the most popular TV type of music in America. She also has experience with these types of shows having been a finalist at the age of eight on Star Search in 1991. And while she also has other less attractive issues that will follow her, including weight issues and her marriage to Eddie Cibrian, these things are also seen as being a good source of attention-getting headlines for the show.

Prior to her death last week, Whitney Houston is said to have been considered for the open spot by Simon Cowell. HP Turnaround Is Slow

Computer and electronics giant, Hewlett-Packard, is still stuck in the middle of a quagmire insofar as a turnaround in the business outlook for the company. Shares of the company were sharply lower today after their relatively new Chief Executive Officer, Meg Whitman, threw cold water on investors by telling the market during an interview on CNBC that it would take a good deal longer for the company to reverse its fortunes and to get itself back on track. In fact, Ms. Whitman said that it could very well take several years before the PC maker would be back to financial health.

Ms. Whitman noted that there needs to be fundamental changes at Hewlett-Packard and that when companies like IBM went through similar growing pains it took them nearly 10 years before they were able to see a light at the end of the tunnel. She went on to say that while she doesn’t expect that it will take ten years, it will take some time and the she hopes to see some progress about five years out into the process. Ms. Whitman’s comments come on the back of first quarter earnings for HP, which ended for them on January 31, 2012, which were much lower than many had hoped to see. Net revenue was $30 billion, down 7% from the prior period and down 8% when revenues are adjusted for currency fluctuations. Earnings per share were also lower, down some 38%.

According to Ms. Whitman, “In the first quarter, we delivered on our Q1 outlook and remained focused on the fundamentals to drive long-term sustainable returns.” She went on to discuss the company need to improve execution, increase effectiveness, and to capitalize on emerging opportunities to reassert HP’s technology leadership. In the past few years HP has had to ride a wave of rough times and disappointing product news, especially the disaster that was their foray into the tablet PC market, to say nothing of a few acquisitions gone bad.

Ms. Whitman took over the company following the unceremonious dismissal of former HP chief Leo Apothekar and the scandal that surrounded his predecessor Mark Hurd, who resigned after allegations of mis-managing funds and expenses with a female contractor. HP is one of many PC makers that are struggling to maintain their share of the market. Earlier this week Dell also reported very disappointing earnings.

My take:

Competition is very strong in this line of business and I think that once you fall it might be hard to get back on your feet, especially when you are as big a company as HP. Apple did it but they completely re-invented themselves and they weren’t nearly as big then as they are now. I hope that HP can recover so that they are able to continue to hire American workers and that their brand isn’t swallowed up by another computer maker.
